This is sturdy and hold several sizes of hot irons. I have a really skinny flat iron and a really wide one, and it keeps both from touching the counter. It is an upright metal coil on a rubber-coated base. It doesn't fold or get any smaller. (but it doesn't collapse at the wrong time either) I am considering getting some for my sisters. They are currently laying their hot irons on potholders from the kitchen. (The irons can slip off of a potholder, this holds them in one place firmly.)
The only drawback that I can see is that the cord could still possibly touch the hot side of the iron if you are not careful. I would still recommend it though.

From Anne: love it. no more brown burn marks on the sink. and no worries the house goes up in flames if you forgot to turn off or unplug your iron.
